Mainframe FICON SAN Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Mainframe FICON SAN Engineer to support a large-scale enterprise storage and mainframe environment. This role focuses on the administration, support, and optimization of SAN director environments supporting IBM z15 and z16 mainframes, enterprise storage arrays, tape infrastructure, and replication fabrics.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with FICON SAN management, Fibre Channel, FCoE, SAN directors, FOS command-line administration, SANnav Management Portal, GDPS, PPRC connectivity, and storage replication support.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administer and support enterprise SAN fabrics supporting mainframe FICON environments.

  • Manage SAN directors, including X6 and X7 director-class platforms.

  • Support environments with multiple logical switches and large-scale director deployments.

  • Perform SAN zoning, configuration, troubleshooting, monitoring, and performance analysis.

  • Support FICON connectivity for IBM z15 and z16 mainframe environments.

  • Manage SAN infrastructure supporting enterprise storage arrays and tape systems.

  • Support storage replication fabrics using SX6 blades.

  • Assist with Metro Mirror and regional replication connectivity administration.

  • Support PPRC connectivity administration in GDPS environments.

  • Use FOS command-line tools for daily SAN administration and troubleshooting.

  • Utilize SANnav Management Portal for monitoring, management, and operational visibility.

  • Collaborate with mainframe, storage, network, and infrastructure teams on changes, incidents, and upgrades.

  • Participate in SAN maintenance, firmware planning, configuration validation, and change implementation.

  • Identify opportunities to automate routine SAN administration tasks through scripting.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Strong experience administering FICON SAN environments.

  • Hands-on experience with Fibre Channel, FCoE, and enterprise SAN networking.

  • Strong knowledge of SAN directors.

  • Experience with director-class platforms, including:

    • SAN256B-7 / 8961-F74

    • SAN512B-6 / 8961-F08

    • SAN512B-8 / 8961-F78

  • Strong FOS command-line administration experience.

  • Experience using SANnav Management Portal.

  • Experience supporting large SAN environments with multiple directors and logical switches.

  • Knowledge of FICON fabrics supporting IBM mainframe platforms.

  • Experience supporting SAN connectivity for enterprise storage and tape systems.

  • Strong troubleshooting skills across SAN, FICON, storage replication, and connectivity issues.

Preferred Skills

  • Experience supporting IBM z15 and z16 mainframe environments.

  • Experience with DS8950 storage arrays.

  • Experience with TS1160, TS7760, and TS7770 tape environments.

  • Knowledge of GDPS environments.

Geoff Curran has a Bachelor of Economics from the University of Western Australia and over twenty years experience as a specialist recruitment practitioner. During that time he has worked with organizations to secure talent at the middle and senior levels.

Geoff began his recruitment career in Perth in the early 1980s. After several years with a national management consulting firm, he joined Arthur Andersen & Co. to establish its executive recruitment division.

In 1989, Geoff moved to Sydney and at Morgan and Banks specialized in recruiting for accounting and finance. He then spent two years in London, further developing his skills in this field.
